Arab commentators reacted with shock and disbelief on Monday over President Bush's robust backing of Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld against calls for his resignation.
Critics had called for him to quit after the furor over the abuse of Iraqi prisoners but analysts, editors and ordinary Arabs were united in their condemnation of Bush who said the United States owed Rumsfeld a "debt of gratitude."

all decent people ought be shocked and appalled by bushes' support of rumsfeld along with countless other of this administration's actions - and what the USA has become. i have lost a lot of faith in our country over the past four years. the bush administration truly must find themselves above everything - above the world community, above the law, above decency. i thought our democratic institutions would protect us from our leaders acting this way. guess i was wrong.
